Safeguarding Week Programme of Events 2026

Welcome to Safeguarding Week 2026!

The Safeguarding Children Partnership, Safeguarding Adults Board and Calderdale organisations present Safeguarding Week 2026 Programme.  The aim is to raise awareness about safeguarding children and adults and the importance that safeguarding is everyone’s business.

Calderdale is again, taking part in a West Yorkshire wide Safeguarding Week where each Local Authority will host a day each, to present a topic of their choice and all practitioners and managers from across West Yorkshire can attend any of those events:

Monday: Hosted by Leeds: County Lines, Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Children, and Domestic Abuse and Older People.

Tuesday: Hosted by Kirklees: Domestic Abuse

Wednesday: Hosted by Wakefield: Modern Slavery and Children, and Responding to Self-neglect

Thursday: Hosted by CalderdaleSafeguarding Children from Risks Outside the Home, and Adult Sexual Exploitation

Friday: Hosted by Bradford: Cyber Safety Basics for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Online

Calderdale partners have also offered local events throughout the week, including a varied offer of face to face, and live online learning sessions all aimed at Calderdale practitioners and managers.

Safer Sleeping

Delivered by Locala – Presented by Penny Baldwin, Janet Smethurst and Julie Brice.  

Time: 12:30pm – 13:00pm

Aim of Session: Locala are introducing a revised approach within the Public Health Early Years Service to strengthen the promotion of safe sleep practices for babies. As part of this initiative, parents will be offered the opportunity for Health Visitors to observe both daytime and night time sleep environments during the first home visit.

While Health Visitors already discuss safe sleep as part of routine practice, this enhanced approach aims to provide more personalised, practical guidance.

The session will outline the new initiative and highlight key findings from recent local and national reviews that reinforce the importance of promoting safe sleep.

Dad’s Building Relationships

Delivered by Calderdale Family Intervention Team

Aim of Session: For professionals to understand the programme we deliver through the Family Intervention Team for dads who would like to challenge and start to change their abusive behaviour towards the mother of their children and to understand the impact of their abusive behaviour on their children.

Step into Calderdale Maze – Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme: from knowledge to practice.

Delivered by Calderdale Maze Service at WomenCentre

Time: 13:00pm – 15:00pm

Aim of Session: Navigate Maze for yourself – This session will provide professionals with the opportunity to step into Calderdale Maze and experience the programme firsthand. The session will strengthen understanding of Calderdale Maze and the referral process and criteria. Then, through interactive exercises and examples of group activities, participants will explore how Calderdale Maze supports behaviour change with people who use domestic abuse and strengthen confidence in making referrals with families you work with. We will end with a question-and-answer session and discussion.

Introduction to the Contest Continuum

Aim of Session: To introduce participants to the UK Counter-Terrorism (CONTEST) strategy, with a focus on the Prevent and Protect elements, and to help attendees understand how individuals may move along the vulnerability and radicalisation continuum.

Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Children

Aim of Session: This session will explore harmful sexual behaviour (HSB), providing a clear overview of what it is and how it is understood within safeguarding practice. Drawing on current research, it will examine what evidence tells us about HSB, why it may occur, and the range of factors that can contribute to it. The session will also focus on your initial steps if you are concerned about an incident of HSB, helping you to recognise concerns, respond appropriately, and understand the importance of early action, recording, and following safeguarding procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all involved.

Domestic Abuse

Aim of Session: The session will focus on domestic abuse and will look holistically at the family context, exploring a range of domestic abuse issues.   These will include domestic abuse affecting a child or partner, domestic abuse experienced by older people, adult child-to-parent abuse and sibling abuse.   The focus will be how a whole family, whole system approach strengthens safeguarding responses.

Adult Sexual Exploitation

Aim of Session: Presented by Coloured Hearts CIC – Debra Cowey is a sexual exploitation and reform specialist and author of the On the Other Side of Sexual Violence series and Sexual Exploitation Framework. With extensive frontline experience and national strategic oversight, she supports services to strengthen policy and responses to adult sexual exploitation.

In this Safeguarding Week session, Cowey explores the realities of Adult Sexual Exploitation (ASE), highlighting structural inequality, risks faced by adult women, and gaps in identification and protection.

Raising awareness of the Child Sexual Abuse Assessment Service / Sexual Assault Referral Centre

The Neglect Toolkit

Aim of Session: Neglect is recognised as the most common form of child abuse affecting children across the UK. The neglect toolkit  supports consistency and quality of assessment of neglect and is designed to be used by anybody working with a child and family and determines where there is a need to explore and understand the issue of neglect further.

This briefing will take a look at the neglect toolkit and when it should be used by anyone working with children to aide their assessment, interventions and referrals.

Cyber Safety Basics for Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Online

Hosted by Bradford Safeguarding Adults Board & Bradford District Safeguarding Children Partnership

Aim of Session: In today’s digitally connected world, cyber safety is an essential component of safeguarding practice, not merely a technical issue. Whether protecting children from online grooming and bullying, or shielding vulnerable adults from scams, coercion, and digital exploitation, understanding cyber safety is vital for anyone in a safeguarding role.

This session is designed to equip professionals, carers, and families with the foundational knowledge needed to identify and respond to digital risks early—before they escalate into safeguarding emergencies. By recognising the signs of technology-facilitated harm, practitioners can take proactive steps to reduce opportunities for abusers to target children and adults at risk, and create safer online environments for those they support.

Other Activities:

Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust Safeguarding Information Stalls and Walking Bus

CHFT will host safeguarding information stalls at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary throughout the week.

The Safeguarding Team will also run a “Walking Bus” visiting different wards and departments, giving staff the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice and support.

Domestic Abuse support trolley coins will be available, providing quick access to support numbers. These can be shared with staff or patients who may not be ready for referral, or who would benefit from accessing support at a later time. For more information, please contact chft.safeguarding@nhs.net
